 Atkinsons Dam weekend

saturday 11th to sunday 12 June 2016

Traditionally the South East Queensland group hosts this weekend camp meet in June as it usually falls on the Queens Birthday Long weekend and we have the scouts grounds to ourselves. Well not this year for Queensland as our Government decided to change it again and transfer it to October. This didn't deter our members at all with one coming out for one night, some two nights, some three and eight members making it a four night stay. We had a total of 26 campers in a variety of camping styles from soft floors, hard floors, forward fold, hybrids and caravans and two day visitors.

We had a number of first time members to the group and they were made welcome. Queensland also made a warm welcome to a number of our New South Wales members in fact we had seven members make the journey from as far away as Orange, Sydney, Stockton, Moree and Tenterfield. They enjoyed the venue and a few of them also did a day drive to check out the surrounding area and a couple of the members then ventured further north to enjoy more of outback Queensland. Much rivalry was to be had between the two states with many a discussion on all things like camping, football and one comment was that we had one fire for NSW and one for Queensland but everyone came and had some times around either fire. We even put on reasonable weather, not too cold and just a few spots of wet weather unlike the weekend before where both Queensland and New South Wales coped a deluge.

This year once again everyone chose to camp below the main fence line to take in as much of the view of the dam which unfortunately is only at 5 percent capacity at present. The sunsets were brilliant as well as the many species of birds. The horses from around the dam did their nightly visits, trying out the fires and one even trying to steal a mat out from under the shower tent. The cattle became game enough and came to visit on the Monday night.

Camping brings out the best of people as there were many hands on deck to help out Greg and Lisa who were having a few issues with the lights on the caravan which turned out to be a problem with the car. All was good and they went home maybe later than they planned but at least had lights.

On Sunday Kathy and Lindsay celebrated their birthdays and a cake was cooked after tea and people around the fire shared a piece as everyone sang happy birthday. I am sorry that some of the regulars had to go home on the Sunday due to missing Monday as a holiday and missed out as it is the first cake I have made in a long time. So sorry Rick especially who was asking when was my midnight cake going to make a come back the day before but it was only made for a special occasion and was not at midnight either.

Thank you to everyone who came along and I hope you enjoyed the weekend as much as we did as hosts. Until next time.

Robyn and Lindsay.
