CTek D250S Dual Wiring Kit

Hi all,

Just signed up to this forum but have been on the Yahoo site for a while now, have met some of you at the national meets the last 3 years, unfortunately not attending this year.

Just looking at buying the Ctek D250S dual from ebay, some come with a wiring kit like the one in the link below, is it really necessary?

Hi Simon,

I do not think a relay is required to install the Ctek D250S charger. As far as I am aware when you have a permanently mounted solar panel, the D250S will automatically switch to the alternator when you start the vehicle.

It is best to use 6B&S twin core sheathed cable from the vehicles battery right through to the camper trailer battery. Don't forget a suitable breaker near the battery in the vehicle & also one near the camper battery on the positive cable. I have used autoelecau shop on Ebay for cable.

I have been buying cable lugs from http://www.sidewinder.com.au Derek carries 6B&S & 8B&S lugs in 6mm, 8mm & 10mm dia hole sizes. Check the discount to members folder for details.

Hi Simon,
I have a Ctek 250S dual next to the battery in the camper.
I have a redarc dual battery setup in my navara (in there when I bought it) with an Anderson plug at the back.
I plug a cable into that to charge the CT battery through the Ctek while driving. (connected to the alternator input on the Ctek) I have put another cable onto the solar input on the Ctek to a red anderson plug for the solar panels.
The Ctek output goes through a hefty fuse (can't remember the size) to the battery.

No relay that I know of unless the redarc acts like a sort of relay.
Send the eBay seller an email asking why the relay.

If you have a solar panel permanently setup on the top of a van & using the Redarc BCDC1225 or BCDC1240 with the inbuilt MPPT solar regulator, you can use the Redarc RK1260 relay so the alternator will automatically charge the battery when the engine is started http://www.campertrailers.org/redarcbcdcinstall4.JPG Both models also come in a LV or low voltage model for vehicles with a low alternator output.

The Redarc BCDC1220 is just a straight DC to DC charger. No LV model.

The relay has 10mm blades. You can get 10mm female yellow insulated crimped terminals from Jaycar cat no PT-4717

The Ctek D250S Dual does the same job as the Redarc BCDC1225 & has a low voltage start up.

Cheers all, thanks for your replies. I'll just go with the charger alone and get separate wiring I guess.

One more thing, at the moment that is, does the ctek need to have dedicated wiring? I'm planning to have a dual battery set up using the red arc isolator under the bonnet and run cable to a battery in the the boot , then do a "splice" off that wiring to the rear bumper for the CT, and have the ctek next to the battery in the CT. Will that work?

Hi Simon,

Yes you are better off having two separate cable runs for both charging systems, one for your auxiliary battery in the vehicle & another for the camper trailer. The charger is only as good as the cable supplying it & demand could result in voltage drop, hot wiring & the battery not recharging to capacity.

New to forum but very interested in subject. I am installing a D250s Dual Ctek DC DC charger into Goldstream Crown camper. User manual recommmends 6mm cable (+OUT on charger @ bottom right terminal) to battery positive terminal , but only 1.5 mm cable at NEG battery terminal to charger (NEG top right terminal). Am I wrong, confused?? My auto sparkie thinks it wrong. See page 13 of manual.
I'm new to trailers and wiring.

Thanks Robcaz, the diagram is great, shows cable sizes, all connections including earths, fuses etc and placement. Just what i've been looking for all day. The Ctek user manual only shows positive connections and no fusing at all, probably not written for beginners. I want to go central Australia so I need to know about my electrics. Thanks again.
