Updating our camper to solar power

Post by Elsewhere » Sun Aug 17, 2014 7:47 pm

Hi,

I have recently added solar to my 2005 Aussie Swag camper trailer.

Previously, charging the 2 x 100AH batteries was done via a 240v multi stage charger, from a 240v supply (mains/generator or from the car via an inverter). We carried a Honda generator to charge the batteries if we stayed in one place for more than 3 nights (the maximum life we got out of the batteries before they needed recharging).

I purchased a Redarc BCDC1225 solar regulator and 12v charger, which means the inverter is now only used to power 240v appliances when needed (read charging laptop, OK ...and electric blanket for those cold nights). The solar panels are Bosch (2 x 90W folding).

The Redarc has an MPPT solar regulator, and handles the charging (25A) from the car and solar panels. This is auto switched via a relay, so when the car is providing power, the solar panels are disconnected.

Details can be found at http://www.elsewhere.id.au/equipment/aussieswag/solar/

The first test in the wild will this weekend when we head up to Lostock Dam.

Cheers,

Hi Greg,

Looking forward to checking out your new 12volt system install. I hope the weather holds for us so you can see how good the MPPT solar regulator & the DC-DC charger tops the batteries up. There are showers forecast for the weekend.

Hi Rob,

Therese has been watching the forecast, and keeps reminding me it is for showers! :)

On a positive note there is a shelter shed at Lostock & we can have campfires which will make it a lot warmer than the Macquarie Woods weekend last year where no fires were allowed. :D

Hi Rob,

I agree. That and some thermals! :)
