Suspension Specialist

Post by BloodNut » Thu Nov 20, 2014 8:05 am

Hi All,

I have a 2009 Mazda BT50 and wanted to know if there are any suspension specialists in Sydney that people can recommend.
I don't want someone who wants to raise my ute and just sell product, I am after someone who can recommend replacement shocks, etc so that my ute can handle the corrugations of tracks like the Oodnadatta Track, Gibb River Road, etc without having to stop every half hour to let the shocks cool. I have limited funds and would like to keep it under $1000 if possible.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I would also like to replace the shocks on my camper trailer. I have a Track Trailer Eagle 1990 model that I am converting to a touring camper with a rooftop tent and awnings. I have owned the trailer for about 8 years now and it has done many trips into the bush for family and friends but unfortunately only a couple for my wife & I, but we are changing that with 8 week trips to the Red Centre first and then to The Kimberley's and Pilbara. I will post a couple of photo's of the converted trailer when it is finished.

Cheers and Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,

We also have a 1990 Track Trailer Eagle which we bought in 1993. If you lift the jockeywheel up you will find a number stamped on the pivot plate that is welded to the A frame. Ours has number 14.

The leafs on the suspension are from a 60 Series Landcruiser with Koni shocks. One side had sag a little over time so I had the leafs reset. That didn't last long until it sagged again so I will buy a new set of leafs which are about $300. I don't know if the leafs are off a petrol or diesel cruiser, but I might go with the diesel set as the trailer weights 1300kg loaded.

The Koni's were leaking so I replaced them with a set of Tough Dog's from Opposite Lock. The length & stroke matched the front end of a Land Rover. They have done around 60,000 km over the past 3 years with no worries.

We replaced the canvas a couple of years ago & are extremely happy with the outcome http://www.campertrailers.org/robcazeag ... update.htm

With all walls opening to full screens including the roof over the bed, it was a real bonus on our recent trip to Far North Queensland keeping the camper cool during the day & even better at night sleeping along the beach fronts where it got down to 20-25 degrees overnight.

I would be interested in seeing the result of your retrofit too.

When we bought the Jeep the hydraulic overrider cylinder & Treg coupling was in the way of opening the rear door (ok with the Patrol's barn doors) so I installed a Vehicle Components electric braked axle & DO35 coupling along with a Redarc Brake Controller with remote head but still had to raise the spare level with the bottom of the door http://www.robcaz.net/raising_spare.htm
happy camping

I use Pedders at Auburn for all our vehicles.
Con, the guy that owns it is very knowledgeable plus owns a 4by and has the passion.
Haven't actually had my camper in there but he has given me good advice on it in the past.

Thanks Gents,
I'll give them both a try.
